Yesterday, my friend sent me Dizzee Rascal’s music video for his newish song, I Don’t Need a Reason. The jam is sick so I listen to in on repeat while finishing up work…and when I had the chance to watch the video I decided that Dizzee Rascal is the bomb. What a naughty scoundrel! His lyrics aren’t the most impressive, but in the video, Dizzee gets political…I like his style. Emile Sornin directed this vine-esque gem – take a look at Alt-J’s Fitzpleasure, another of her masterpiece classics, and you’ll start to get a feel for her freaky and bizarre genius. There’s depth to her work.
After reading Dizzee’s Wiki page (his real name is Dylan Kwabena Mills), I deducted that music was his saving grace. As a child, little Dylan was a trouble maker, to say the least – robbing pizza delivery guys and fighting with teachers were just some of the not-so-innocent pranks he pulled. His behavior led teachers to nickname the punk, Rascal. But music class proved therapeutic for the rabble-rouser and in effect, his career began as a young lad making music on his school’s computers. Dizzee Rascal, a punk who found a way to channel his energy. Stay in school, kids.
I Don’t Need A Reason is one of the tracks on Dizzee’s new album set for release in October – if this jam is an indicator, the album should be a pistol.
